10 ways to live a Mindful life in Digital Age
Today, we all are Living in virtual Or rather I would say in a “disruptive world”. I am saying this because each of us is distracted by the content, events and opinions, which are truly not related to us or neither going to have any positive impact in our life.
Whatever, happening in remote places with the unknown people and continuous Upgradation of the technology further pave the way for overconsumption of the content through digital or social media outlets.
This is causing a serious disruption to our minds processing abilities, which are limited. This is directly impacting our quality life in a major way.
In today's world our mind goes into hyper active mode or continuously analyzing the events or things which are happening around us.
This means our mind is always in a processing mode and loses the thing called “ Resting or Reset”.
If this is happening with you then “ Welcome to the Digital World”.
One thing I would like to make clear ... .being digital is not bad but overly of everything is quite bad. I am sure this is pretty much simple to understand
Okay, Now get back to the question: why being digital taking a serious toll on mindful living?
Here's some of the major disruption caused by the digital age to all of us.
- Living in the Virtual and Anonymous World without real life connections.
- Cut off from the near or dear ones and more time on screen.
- Overconsumption of the content driven by social media outlets.
- Lost the peace of mind in the distracted era of continuous analysis.
- Over information puts our mind on Autopilot mode.
- Lost the importance of social connection in our lives.
- Ignorance towards mental wellbeing, and also physical health.
- Most important above all is “Reflection” on life became the last priority.
These are some of the disruptions which I personally felt in my life. I am sure each one of us is experiencing some kinds of subjective disruption in our lives. Something may be like…related to the loss of concentration for studies, loss of quality relationships as we get too busy with not so important tasks.
Now, let's not get into the debate of that but one thing is pretty much visible, “ We all are diving through the same boat of restlessness”.
Here, I will suggest some of the practices which I personally adopted and that worked for me.
1.Be present in the Moment
This is the first practice I seriously opted to come out from the past regrets and future uncertainties. In other words this is called “OVERTHINKING”, the root cause of our restlessness.
This problem gets stimulated by the online world immensely.
By seeing others doing good on social media we often subconsciously start comparing our lives with them. This brings us huge pressure and we start looking at ourselves as a failure.
Then we start living more in our head than in the present moment and lose control of our mindful living.
Along with this we also become helpless when it comes to finding peace of mind…because there is so much to process in this virtual world.
Now, let me tell you what worked for me is the “Reading”.
Yes… most of you might not believe but this has worked like anything else for me. Since I started reading, it frees my mind for a longer span of time. It helps me to present more in the moment than my head.
Being present in the moment makes one reflect more than process in life. This really paved the way for mindful living in the era of digital disruption
2. Have a Goal…please
I am saying this because… . One thing you might have realised is that “ The more we have time , the more we get trapped in a non-existing digital world”.
In a directionless life we often lose control of ourselves along with our lives, and we channelize energy and time for things which are making us more anxious.
We tend to spend more time in the virtual world. Because we have nothing meaningful to do in our lives.
To come out of this loop of nowhere… . I reset my goal and draw a clear framework to achieve them.
I am sure this will also work for you, once you set your goal. Because, Having a goal keeps you engaged and channelizes your energy for productive tasks. As it gives you purpose in life it also drives you towards making a meaningful life and prosperous life.
3.Take a Pause
In our lives we often witness the “hush-hush culture” that is rewarded by society and by the family. We often try to copy that in our lives.
But, do you ever think, Is it really important to hustle in life?
Can't we do things or our jobs with a peaceful and harmonious mind?
For that we need to take a “pause” in our lives. Pause before doing simple things like thinking, speaking and taking any actions in our life.
Taking a pause doesn't mean stopping, rather it leads us to reflect more than react in life. Here, reflection means analyzing the action and their outcomes from the perspective of a meaningful and quality life.
So, take a pause and sit with yourself for some time. It will give a bird eye view of your life. This will declutter your life effortlessly.
4. Have a Strong Social Network
Japanese culture highlights the importance of the social network. The famous book “Ikagai” emphasizes having a social network is really important to lead a meaningful life.
The social network means having a bunch of close friends or family, with whom you can share your goods, bads or living life together. Various studies backed by scientific research often explain that real life connections add a positive impact on our lives.
And in the end of life the real life connections matter more than bank balance.
See your network as a spice that adds flavor to your life.
5. Practice Gratitude
I know each of us listens to this advice frequently. But, this seriously works. This brings the universe into the picture. The more we practice gratitude in our life the more we receive from the universe. There is always something to be grateful for in life.
Here what I understand from this practice is that “Gratitude reduces the negative mental attitude, boosts the positive mindset”.
When we practice gratitude, we forget the complaints which we are having from life.
Thus, gratitude builds a positive mindset which has a cascading effect on our life, career and relationship and makes our life more beautiful and meaningful in this disruptive world.
6. Regular Digital Detoxing
Taking breaks from the virtual world on a regular basis saves us from the “ Digitalization of life”.
Being in the digital world often leads to problems like depression, mental health issues. People in today's era are more likely to be on the phone than enjoy real world things. They forget the fragrance of the first rainfall, cradle of a child and talking to the close ones.
So, regular break from the devices is mandatory to reorient our focus to the things which are worthy. The limited use of the device's and regular digital detox filters our minds as well as our lives.
Just leave the Gazette behind and explore the life you just got one life.
7. Keep learning New Skill
Today's digital world has not just brought disruption in our mindful lives, but also enhanced our skills,if we are well versed with these digital tools and their applications.
For example CHATGPT, DEEPSEEK… . These are the most revolutionary platforms that humans have created so far and these are taking human creativity and imagination to the next level.
This drives us towards learning more and adding value to our life . By making us more awake, informed and productive people.
Skills keep connecting mindful living with upgraded mindful living. Meaning the more we are skilled the better we become and we better live enhanced qualitative versions of our mindful living.
8. Physical exercise
Everybody wants to be fit and slim as it boosts their confidence, especially in social settings.
But, barring few who are ready to take their time out for exercise and work upon themselves.
Most of us are too busy in our so-called virtual world.
For us being digitally present is more important, because missing from there might lead to FOMO.
For that we are ready to neglect our physical health as if our body belongs to someone else.
But, we should not forget that physical fitness may be different from mental fitness. But both are complementary to each other. Being physically fit gives us a sense of achievement for fitting in a framework of the mindful life.
Since I began my physical fitness journey it not only boosts my confidence but also improves my mental wellbeing and makes my life further valuable.
Thus, I seriously recommend all of you to just love yourself, be in shape and rest will follow you.
9. Set boundaries in life
This means there is no need to be involved in everything that is happening around us. Or there is no need to know everything about everyone.
It is not necessary to check every notification, answer every call and reply to every email.
Limit your curiosity to know everything about everyone. And see the results, you will be shocked. Follow this for a week and see the difference.
You will start respecting yourself. Your concentration will be high on the things you do. You will start enjoying solitude, which is a significant step towards living a meaningful life.
Boundaries, whether digital, social or physical, often protect our authenticity. This will keep us on the exclusive path of continuous starving for meaningful and mindful life in the era of disruption and distraction.
10. Write a Journal
A traditional, yet conscious method to inner engineering. Writing about goals, aspirations and manifestation sometimes provides us a much needed break from digital life.
This also makes us conscious about our thoughts and thinking.
Since I started writing journals I have realized that my thoughts became more clear and organized.
It provides clarity about life and how to make it further meaningful for the betterment of ourselves.
In the end I would like to share my story, how I got into the “mindful living” from “just living”. All this started with the book “MINDSET” By Carol Dweck.
This book taught me that there are two types of the mindset, positive and negative mindset. While the positive mindset focuses upon learning and improving. A negative mindset focuses on having fixed qualities and talent. And which mindset do you have determines how well you live your life?
No doubt like everyone else I also strive to live meaningfully and do something meaningful in life for me and also for others.
But, it is also quite difficult in the present tech and digital driven world.
Still, I try my best to deliver this message to all of you who are looking for a pause to make their lives meaningful and mindful in this digital world of ours.
