How to stop overthinking: 17 habits you need to let go

“ You don't have to believe every thought your mind creates.”

When you are constantly analyzing or worrying about things, you are playing the same conversations in your mind repeatedly, you are putting extra emphasis on “what if” situations, you are struggling to make simple and easy decisions, witnessing sleepless nights, feeling mentally drained without doing any significant work. Then…

Congratulations, you are an Overthinker.
 Yes! you heard it right.

Your excessive involvement with your thinking makes you a perfect Overthinker.

To overcome this you have nothing major to do, but to stop following certain habits, which are unknowingly dragging you into “Overthinking cycle.”

1.Holding past failures

It is not inevitable to gain success in everything or on every path we are choosing. Failure is an important part of our business. Whether it is related to our education, relationships and career.

But, what is non- negotiable is holding these failures close to our heart. When we hold our failures tightly… we often blame ourselves and we unknowingly get trapped into the “Overthinking loop” where we constantly think about what, we could have done to avoid failures.
Here, overthinking seems to be the solution to every thing.

So, stop holding your failures, and let go of Overthinking

2.Negative self talk

Negative self talks come from self doubt. When we doubt our capabilities and abilities. We think a lot before taking actions. We don't consider ourselves worthy of progress, success and achievements.
We keep thinking, what if we fail? What if things do not turn out as we imagine? Whether I am going right or not?
This keeps us in a “thinking mode”.

Thus let go of your fears, move forward.

3.Taking everything personal

We often see people's opinions, comments and situations from our own perspectives. We do over analysis of what people are saying and that must be related to us only. We draw meaning which is right according to us only.

Here, we constantly think about : why are they saying? What is the meaning of it? Are they pointing out towards me?
Taking everything personally makes us more vulnerable to others' thinking. And this drags us into overthinking mode.

Avoid taking things personally, come out from Overthinking habits.

4.Judgeing people

Not everyone is going to do everything according to us. People have their free will, they are free to do anything as per their own understanding.
We do not need to take any effort to judge them. It is none of our business. Why are they doing this and that?

Why to waste our “precious currency of thinking” to judge them.

So, stop judging people and their actions. And save yourself from Overthinking.

5.Giving Explanation

What are you doing?
Why are you doing this?
What will be the outcome of your actions?
Why are you not following their advice?
Why are you doing things differently?

These are some of the most probable questions, for that we have to have readymade answers. For that we have to put our thinking or sometimes Overthinking at work to get reasonable and logical answers.

But wait… . Why to answer… . There is no need. We are not supposed to answer any questions that are thrown at us.

Stop answering… choose silence, forgo Overthinking.

6.Chasing perfection

Chasing perfection in everything makes us explore various options and put unnecessary burden on our thinking. There is a very minute difference between pointing out lacking and Overthinking.

Pointing fingers on everyone for everything for perfection makes us overthink about small or tiny matters. Where we are not supposed to invest so much of our mind.

Thus, stop chasing perfection in everything. Settle for moderates in life.

7.Being couch potato

When you are stuck in one place for a longer duration. You are more likely to linger upon one particular thought. As you are neither moving yourself nor your thoughts. This becomes the perfect breeding ground for Overthinking.

Moving means doing different things, viewing different views, feeling different senses. This will automatically shift your focus from Overthinking to other things.

Start moving… say bye to Overthinking.

8.Feeling of envy, jealousy

We are humans and we are very likely to get envious and jealous of the wealth, success and progress of others. We often overthink about it. We often question ourselves. This is where overthinking comes into picture.
Why do people easily get success?
Why are certain people born with a silver spoon?
But, be mindful here slight slippage from your conscious thoughts push you towards Overthinking.

Stop having envy and jealousy… get busy, work hard, make your dreams come true. So, you have no time to overthink.

9.Fear of uncertainty

One of the most important causes of Overthinking is uncertainty about the future. When we are living consciously, we are reluctant but we can't help it from thinking about our future. But it's okay as far as you are aware about it.
But when we unconsciously keep living in the future. We live more in our imaginations than real life by assuming different scenarios.
Our thinking automatically becomes overthinking without our recognition as there is so much uncertainty.

So, stop living in an uncertain future, live in the present moment and leave Overthinking behind.

10.Holding grudges

When we hold grudges, we keep waiting for our turn to settle scores with people who hurt us. Till then we keep chasing each opportunity to make scores equal. And we continue to remain restless, as we are so much involved in overthinking. We overthink about what to do when we are going to get a chance? This costs us our peace and our energy.

So, stop holding grudges and make peace with yourself and others. And let go overthinking.

11.Stress about everything

Human beings have a tendency to control everything. They wanna control everything around us and about them. They want favorable results in each action they perform.

When they can't. Stress becomes their everyday thing.

And when they are stressed, they tend to overthink. This is how they are supposed to get solutions. It trapped them into the “sea of overthinking.”

Thus, stop stressing about everything. Keep yourself out of the “sea of overthinking.”

12.Neglecting relationships

If we have close relations with our family members or with our friends. We tend to share everything with them. They are always there to advise us in our worst times. They are also there to check our overthinking.

They are like our happy home. Where, overthinking ceases to exist.

While in the opposite scenarios where we do not have any close relationships, because we never take any conscious effort to maintain relationships. So, when difficulties hit us, we have no one to talk to, to take advice… . And we keep talking to ourselves, more likely in a negative way. As there is no one to guide us.

So, maintain close relationships and this will keep you away from overthinking.

13.Information overload

In the quest of knowing everything about everyone. We often overload our minds. In the era of social media or the virtual world, where the information flows like air. Information overloading is inevitable.

When you have over information, we are likely to analyze opinions, events and scenarios. This is what leads to overthinking. We keep testing our hypothesis on different scenarios.

Here, our consciousness takes a back seat and our mind takes the front seat..

Hence, stop consuming everything that is served to you and forbid overthinking.

14.Believing in every thought that mind creates

Our mind generates millions of thoughts per day. Each thought is not worthy of giving attention or believing.
Because if we believe our each and every thought we are more likely to feel restless. We keep analyzing our thoughts.
What are we thinking?
Why are we thinking?
Our thinking builds upon our thoughts. We will get trapped into the “overthinking process.”
Thus, stop believing in every thought your mind creates.

Filter out excess of everything and choose overthinking free life.

15.Fixed mindset

People with a fixed mindset often value results and outcomes over efforts and learning. For them action and hard work means results, everything else is useless.

When they face setbacks in life. They couldn't think of anything else than failures. They inevitably get trapped into an “overthinking cycle.”
While people with a growth mindset value more effort and learning. For them failures are like lessons and experiences. They easily evade the overthinking cycle.

This, adopt a growth mindset and let go of overthinking.

16.Overlooking mindfulness

Overlooking mindfulness trapped us in the past and future, there is no present here. We continue to think about past events and future uncertainties. An unconscious lifestyle keeps us in the overthinking loop.

Being mindful and living in the present moment is one of the best ways to avoid overthinking. By simply having awareness about our inner self and our surroundings, we can let go of overthinking effortlessly.
Here, we are neither living in the past nor in the future. We are just enjoying the present without past regrets and future uncertainties.

Thus, being mindful is the best way to break the cycle of overthinking.

17.Neglecting health

Our thought process is impacted by our diet, our lifestyle. What kind of food are we having? If we are constantly eating junk food, neglecting our health. This will ruin our “second mind” that is our gut. A good gut health acts as a filtering agent, when it comes to our thinking.

On the other hand, whether we are living an active or sedentary life also affects our thinking. A sedentary lifestyle often causes overthinking.
Thus, stop neglecting health and take care of it, it will keep check on overthinking.

Now, it is your turn… .

Let go of these habits and forbid overthinking.

Stop worrying about things and start enjoying life. Stop replaying painful memories repeatedly in mind instead focus on learning from them. Keep your mind stable by performing any task with full presence.

By letting go of these practices, you can easily break the “overthinking cycle”. Stop following the above mentioned habits and see the magic.

But remember this is not a one time process rather it is a journey. It is a continuous process. So, keep an eye on yourself and whenever you enter an overthinking zone… just go through this guide. You will find your way out.
