We all since our childhood heard this timeless advice from our elders that " Time is precious and use it judiciously, as it is not going to come back once passed.”
But how many of you actually pay heed to these golden words?
I think most of us remain oblivious to this, despite knowing the consequences of it.
Because we are too busy to pay attention to the uses of our time.
And with technological advancement or rather I would say the “ Onset of digital media platforms” It is becoming further challenging to keep a check on our time.
On these platforms we don't know when or how our hours passed in minutes and our minutes passed in seconds. Until we realize, we already created a disaster and left only with guilt. Guilt of wasting time, doing nothing.
This is the story of every other individual in the digital era.
Everyone wants to come out of this loop, only few can make it. Because they consciously tried to come out by analyzing their time uses.
But this takes a lot of time and not everyone is good at finding patterns in the hustle bustle of life.
Here, as per my observation these are some of the time stealing things that we all do.
1.Busy in head
We all live more in our heads than in the present moment. We always keep thinking about the things we have to do. Even in that particular moment we are doing something else.
Because our mind keeps wondering about things we have to do, we constantly think about the task, until it gets done. This makes us live more in our heads.
This itself is not only time consuming but exhausting for the mind too.
Thus, stop living in your head and save your time to live the moment.
2.Unproductive occupation
I personally took two hours to prepare dinner for four, while my mother took four hours to do the same.
Why?
What I observed is that she does many things simultaneously, that are not that important or things can be worked out without doing those tasks. For example she keeps doing utensils continuously, while I do in the end when all is done.
This is one of my experiences, you can also observe in your surroundings… . How people remain occupied in unproductive things. It is applicable in other areas also.
This steals a lot of your time, you can save your precious time by performing more in less time.
3.Dragging things to chase perfection
Doing simple tasks in many ways to chase perfection only steals your precious time. Perfection is all about mind games, there is no optimum criteria for it.
Instead of focusing on perfection we should focus on performing. Because chasing perfection only consumes our precious time. Which have a huge opportunity cost.
4.Waiting for favorable conditions
Sometimes we wait to turn the tide as per our comfort to start something new, something important. But what we lack is… there is nothing called perfect timing in life, rather you have to make your timing perfect by doing what is supposed to do. Waiting only costs your time.
5.Lack of confidence
We all are very good at encouraging others to move ahead in their life or do something extraordinary. We believe in them.
But when it comes to us we underestimate ourselves. We lack confidence in ourselves to do something meaningful or something extraordinary. This reluctance steals too many precious years of our lives.
Thus have confidence and don't let your hesitance steal your joy.
6.Overthinking
Overthinking is now becoming a disease that is pulling our legs backwards. Overthinking not only steals our precious time but also mentally exhausts us. It leaves no room to make the best out of the worst.
On average a person spends more time on overthinking than performing actual tasks.
The interesting part is that most of the time most of us do not have any idea about how much of our time goes into overthinking.
7.Holding past
We often bring our past into the present by holding it. What we don't realize is that … it already passed. There is no point of keeping it close. But we are what we are… can't let go of the past easily and let it keep stealing our precious time.
If we close our past notebook and create a new one for your future how much ahead you could go? Think about that…
8.Directionless life
Lack of direction makes us wonder here and there. It keeps us in experiment mode.
First we find out what to do?
Then how to do? Then comes actual doing.
If you succeed then that is fine, unless back to square one. Start again.
This is how directionless life steals our precious time. Thus have a goal, have a direction, if you want to make best use of your time and your life.
9.Eating junk
This is what most people are not able to relate to directly, as it seems a different thing. But, what they didn't realize is that their biological clock works upon it.
What you are eating is directly affecting your biological clock. The disturbing biological clock will affect your sleep cycle. Sleep deprivation makes you less productive and less creative.
You are more likely to spend extra time on your usual work. This is how junk food eats your precious time.
10.Complaining
Complaining is a human's one of the basic traits. At which we all are pretty good and we all love to complain about almost all the things in our lives.
And why do we complain? Because we are afraid of challenges, we are afraid of uncertainties that life brings to us.
But, instead of complaining one should focus more on doing or accepting things as they are. Our life will not only be sorted but also save our precious time.
11.Gossiping
People love gossiping about others. Gossiping is like a spice that adds flavors to their lives.
What they didn't realize is how much time they are spending on discussing others' business.. could be used to make their lives better.
Let's leave people and their business for them only and save our precious time for something beautiful, something worthy.
12.Mindless scrolling for entertainment
In this digital age scrolling seems to be perfect destination for entertainment. But it is also invariably time stealing activity. Scrolling eats our time like nothing else.
During scrolling we went into an endless loop. Coming out of it seems to be a daunting task, rather it becomes our Usual things.
13.Smart yet distracting devices
Though smart devices have an immense use and they simplify our lives on a few digital buttons. But we don't see the interruption they bring in our lives.
Constant notifications, emails, messages and reminders not only steals our time but also mixes our personal time with work time. It blurred the work life boundaries and gave us a false conception of being busy.
14.Fear and worries
Most of the time we remain fearful of the scenario that is very likely to occur. Our fears are based on our imagination, which has a rare chance to turn into reality.
Similarly our worries… Most of the time comes from hypothetical situations, which have no real life linkages. But still they are very much effective in stealing our precious time without realizing it.
Takeaways
These might be day to day things for most of us. This is how we live our lives or this is how we spend our time.
What we don't follow is the outcomes of these time stealing things.
How they stole our precious time without sending any notification to us.
For most of us these are tiny habits, which we ignore most of the time. But what is forgotten is that “Our habits make our life”. We are made up of our habits.
Bad habits will attract bad things while good habits attract good things.
So, be mindful of your time as it is exhausting or it cannot be brought back.
